That time where Book One almost made a good point before abruptly shifting back to love triangles and deus ex machina

Part of me is actually impressed as to how close Book 1 came to a great plot and nuanced discussion. It was literally RIGHT THERE and somehow the writers couldn’t take the most obvious half step forward. That determination to force in the overdone love triangle trope instead is almost laughable.
