Dubai’s “Mall of the World” will have its very own Oxford Street and Broadway. It will also have galleons, waterfalls, a giant retractable dome – and be climate-controlled
Launched with a fanfare by the emirate’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, it is a vision for a climate-controlled leisure district, a place of hotels and shops, entertainment and healthcare, all connected by hermetically sealed avenues – 7km of them – along which trams will trundle.

what!? What!? WHAT!?
Oh dear.

more than that : if you see a girl being harassed, she won’t always have that reflex. So YOU go and tell her : “Hiiii (insert random name here) I didn’t see you ! what are you doing here ? So glad to see you, come sit with me”. I promise you the girl won’t think twice before going with you.
I was with friends in a late night tramway once, everyone was drunk and tired, and there was a girl all alone in the seat facing ours. She minded her own business, finishing the sauce of an empty french fries carton. Two drunk guys show up and sit on each side of her, telling her that she shouldn’t eat that, that she will get fat, that it would be a shame to let such a pretty body go fat, and a various number of disgusting things. So I said “hey Julie, why are you letting those douchebags annoy you, come back, sit with us.” She looked at me and immediately changed sides to sit with us. The guys were surprised, saying “she’s your friend ?!” and I just replied “yes, and you’re annoying her right now.” I stayed with her until she got out of the tramway safe.
When you’re being harassed it’s sometimes very hard to think straight and find a quick way to react, so I encourage everybody to do this if you see another woman being harassed. Pretend you know her, and that she’s your friend. Let her know you’re here to side with her and protect her. Help girls be safe.

i wonder how people describe me when they’re talking about me to someone who’s never met me
The most beautiful cat cafe I have been to. It’s called Temari no Ouchi (Temari’s house) in Tokyo, Japan. The soft music and ambience feels like you are in a Studio Ghibli film. Had to take the Japan Railway there, but was totally worth the extra trip, & unlike the central Tokyo cat cafes, this one has no time limit, so feels totally relaxed. Several girls were even sleeping there amongst the cats.

We’ve raised enough money in 24 hours to make the Harvard trip a permanent part of the MHBA curriculum. With two weeks left in the fundraiser, I sat down with Ms. Lopez today to learn the best way that we could continue to help her secure a bright future for her students.
“We have a major need for a summer program,” she explained. “Learning stops during the summer for my scholars. We have what is called a ‘summer slide.’ My scholars can’t even go outside. It’s too dangerous. As an exercise, my teachers broke into small groups and took a walk through the community. We wanted to understand how our students live. We went inside the housing projects. The parks and playgrounds were empty because it’s too dangerous. Even the library isn’t a safe zone. Just last Saturday, one of my scholars had two guns pulled on him while he was walking to the community center. In broad daylight. It’s just too dangerous to be outside, so my scholars stay inside all summer. They aren’t learning to ride horses or drive boats, and they certainly aren’t traveling. They miss out on the enrichment available to children from more affluent neighborhoods. They need a safe place where they can do activities and continue to grow their minds. I tried to put together a program last summer, but I couldn’t afford it. I couldn’t really put together any activities, and I could only use teachers-in-training. I need the funds to put together a program with my own teachers so my students have a safe place where they can continue to grow outside of school.”
Ms. Lopez estimates that an effective summer program will cost about $40,000 a year. So every $40,000 beyond the $350,000 we’ve already raised will provide another “safe and productive summer “ for the students at Mott Hall Bridges Academy.

Sant Pau Hospital, Barcelona | Spain (by David Cardelus)
Sant Pau hospital, UNESCO’s World Heritage sites since 1997, has been completely renovated and accessible to the general public. Located several blocks away from Sagrada Familia, the facility, designed by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, has been documented by the camera of David Cardelus.
“One morning in 1961 at the Querini Stampalia, I asked him to keep water outside the palace… He looked at me and after a pause he said: “Inside, inside! Water must be inside, like everywhere in the city. We just need to control and use it as a shining and reflecting substance. You will see the light reflections on the yellow and purple stuccos on the ceiling. That is so gorgeous!”
– Giuseppe Mazzariol, director of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, recalls Carlo Scarpa’s attitude to the creation of the museum space in the centre of Venice.
When I arrived at the Fondazione one afternoon last week, the tide was rising and canal water was slowly infiltrating the dusty channels cast into the museums interior, making it’s way through round holes cut into the walls. The steel grilled ‘watergate’ in the museums facade is permanently submerged and the sound of water lapping against stone inside the corridor and it’s cooling effect makes the space uniquely beautiful, neither interior nor exterior.
In the garden to the rear there is a beautiful continuity of form and material from the inside spaces.
I think Scarpa’s design and many of the older buildings in Venice offer a positive glimpse of future opportunities for living in cities threatened by rising water levels.
